Introduction to the Slough Consortium 11 Plus exam

To be eligible to apply for a place at a Slough grammar school (Herschel Grammar School, Langley Grammar School, St Bernard’s Catholic Grammar School and Upton Court Grammar School), your child will need to pass the Slough Consortium 11 Plus exam. Children born between 1st September 2015 and 31st August 2016 will take the Slough Consortium 11+ exam on Saturday 19th September 2026 to be eligible to apply for a place for September 2027.

The Consortium operates a shared 11 Plus testing process, with all four schools using the same test papers and common eligibility criteria for selection.

Following CEM Cambridge’s announcement in October 2022 that it would stop providing paper-based 11+ exams from September 2023, the Slough Consortium required a new test provider from 2023 onwards. We therefore moved all students preparing for Slough onto our GL Assessment syllabus at the earliest opportunity, ensuring they received additional preparation for the GL-style of questions.

The Slough Consortium of Grammar Schools contracted with GL Assessment as the test provider for the 11+ examinations held in September 2023, 2024 and 2025, and has confirmed that GL Assessment will also be the test provider for the September 2026 examination.

The Slough Consortium has its own contract with GL Assessment and there is no sharing of 11+ scores with any other schools. Therefore, for example, a student applying to both Buckinghamshire and Slough will need to sit both exams.

The tests identify the top 35% of the cohort as eligible for consideration for entry to grammar school, and the eligibility mark is 111.

Data-Led Approach With SuccessTrack® by Marie Redmond

In addition to weekly spelling tests, our term-time students undergo formal assessments twice per term—at half-term and at the end of the term—covering all topic areas. These assessments provide a valuable measure of progress over time, ensuring that we can track genuine improvements in attainment without being overly influenced by short-term fluctuations. Testing more frequently risks skewing results due to the occasional ‘off week,’ whereas our structured approach strikes the perfect balance between regular monitoring and meaningful insight.

Based on the initial assessment and your child's specific answers, we create a personalised tuition plan that sets individual targets for each subject area that is relevant to them, such as English, maths, verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Every lesson is designed to develop these areas. We continuously monitor progress, allowing us to refine tuition plans to ensure they suit your child's needs and challenges.

Parents are always welcome to contact us at any stage during their child's 11+ course for feedback on their development. They can speak with their child's teacher after lessons or contact Marie directly by phone or email for further insight. As a smaller provider, we take pride in our ability to offer tailored guidance and maintain a close, supportive relationship with families.

  • Jay is extremely enjoying the course and always has a smile on his face when we collect him. Well Done!! The Summer course and your cooperation has been outstanding. We have recommended you to many of our friends and look forward to enrolling our seven year old daughter in the future.

Year 5 parent, Taplow (Summer 2016)

  • I just thought I would let you know the Eleanor passed her 11 plus very well. She is so pleased. She thoroughly enjoyed the Easter, summer and refresher courses she did with you and gained lots from these. The antonym/synonym snap game was a particular hit and gave us a new way of learning these which otherwise was a particularly dry topic. She also loved the small classes, teachers and learnt a lot generally. Thank you very much.

  • My son had a wonderful experience with Marie Redmond face-to-face tuition. I am absolutely pleased with his Bucks secondary transfer test score of 158. A special thanks to Irene, who is an exceptionally talented and kind teacher at getting tough areas understood and getting tasks done at high speed. It has greatly helped my son in his time management skills and confidence.I am truly grateful to MR team for how they have helped with feedback and reports to aware parents on how to support their child better at home. Marie and Craig are both always available to help and respond to any queries. I will definitely recommend it to all my friends. Thank you.[From Google Review. • She passed the 11 Bucks exam. I would like to thank you for all support over the holidays. The classes were really beneficial for her.

Year 5 parent, Stoke Poges (2017)

  • Ruby has worked very hard over the past few months on her 11+, she managed her own 11+ learning around her school homework and was led by her motivation towards completing homework prior to her classes with Anne. I shared with her your expectation of 70%+ pass mark and I think she went for it! Please say a huge thanks to Anne from me as Ruby thoroughly enjoyed her summer course! Ruby also received an excellent end of year report from school, so we are mega proud of her! Also, the prizes really help! They seem to be the most important thing in Ruby’s life at the moment!????Many Thanks!

    Year 4 parent, Ickenham (2020)

  • Here are her results: 143. We are chuffed to bits and she could not have achieved this without your guidance and training from all the teachers she has had especially Sarah – whose firm but fair hand (much needed for Anya!) set this girl on the right path. Thank you so much.

Year 6 parent, High Wycombe (2020)

  • We are all very pleased as she has passed! Thank you so much for all your training and guidance, I really think your course helped her achieve the result she did.

Year 5 parent, Wooburn Green (2015)

  • Our son Ryan recently completed years 4 and 5 with Marie Redmond tuition and has just scored a good pass in the Secondary Transfer Test. We can’t thank Marie and the team (particularly Sarah) enough. What seemed an insurmountable task at the start of year 4 was broken down into a well structured and progressive process that never overwhelmed him and took him to the point where he walked into the exam on the day confident that he was well prepared. In particular the regular tests that Ryan had taken throughout years 4 and 5 and also the mocks he sat in the summer just before meant that he took exam day (and the build up to it) in his stride. Thanks again to Marie and the team.[From Google Review. The location of the parent/child has been excluded as their name is featured on Google]

  • We are pleased to learn of Joshua's continued progress in his eleven plus studies. We know that he has enjoyed the new teaching format and being challenged. Please pass on our thanks to Sinead.  We know that it has been a difficult time in terms of having to change your delivery model at short notice but we appreciate you doing this.
