Why We Teach with Books, Not Screens

Many tuition companies now teach online, and some were built that way from the start. While technology has an important role in education, and can be valuable when used well, learning primarily through screens is not the most effective way for children to learn.

Children learn best in a focused, classroom environment, where they can engage fully with their work and receive immediate guidance from experienced, qualified primary teachers.

Research led by Professor John Jerrim at University College London has shown that pupils often perform better when working on paper rather than screens. Over time, this can make a meaningful difference to their progress.

This reflects what we see every day in the classroom.

Working with physical books helps children:

  • focus for longer without distraction
  • retain what they’ve learned more effectively
  • build confidence through steady, visible progress

That’s why our lessons are classroom-based and centred around carefully designed printed materials.

Alongside carefully selected books from leading publishers, our Superbrain books are designed in-house specifically for how children learn best. They are clear, engaging and child-friendly, using visual elements such as illustrations to support understanding.

This reflects established research into how children learn, including dual coding theory (Paivio, 1971), which shows that combining words and visuals improves memory and comprehension. Our Superbrain books are designed with this in mind, helping pupils process information more easily and stay engaged.

We offer online sessions for catch-up when a child can’t attend in person, and provide Superbrain Skills Videos to support learning between lessons. Our core teaching, however, remains face to face, where the strongest learning happens.

  • I just wanted to say that it is a delight to see the subtle differences to your tuition since Millie did it 2/3 years ago. The online platform to view their progress, superbrain cards, your own bespoke books, and just the general adminstration has been really good. When we initially signed up Harvey, I was concerned if it was the right tuition for him as I remember Millie finding is really difficult to keep up with the weekly homework, whereas other providers had much less 'homework' and kids were not as stressed. And whether a much smaller class / or 1-2-1 was more beneficial. However, Harvey has been amazing and has been completing his weekly tuition homework with no issues - so clearly just a difference in working ethic with my children! Anyway, just wanted to let you know that its great to see the new improvements. A friend of mine also have her daughter with you and she is really happy too.

  • The feedback has been very helpful indeed and it is useful to know the areas that Safa needs to focus on. Safa has very much enjoyed attending the 2 summer courses. She has always found Anne to be very approachable and helpful. As always, Anne’s lessons are enabling and motivating. The summer course homework is very helpful and Safa has been completing these as per the guidance. We were both impressed with the Marie Redmond Verbal Reasoning books. Safa has found these to be user friendly - combining both GL and CEM questions. Safa even asked if there was a Marie Redmond Maths word problem book!!

  • Thank you, considering the support that you, alongside Craig and the tutors, have provided my son with and opportunity for him to succeed. It is very well-designed with the rewards system that motivates, well-structured and the quality of the MRT resources, especially the challenging comprehension, VR vocabulary, vocabulary daily work, flashcards, and math from the superbrain books and worksheets which really tests your ability at a higher level. His creative writing has improved immensely with the techniques, and he oftens receives commendation from school, commenting that he will become an author (which he wants to). He is enjoying creative writing a lot, thanks to Anne and her expertise. He is an enthusiast for the book club - to receive a book voted for, that comes through the door is exciting to open, followed by questions, creative projects and chances to win prizes. We only wished this continued past the 11+. You have definitely triumphed in how to engage a child in the 11+ journey. As well as this, thank you for the guidance for myself in navigating through the process. It has been most useful seeing the progress he has made, clearly as evidenced in the SuccessTracker, from assessments to mocks, anonymous comparative results. As you can see, he has has progressed from strength to strength. I am proud and thank you for this. Regardless of his successes in the 11+, he has learnt a great deal and good learning habits and techniques.
