In 2021, Sir John Madejski, the former owner and chairman of Reading Football Club and the founder of AutoTrader, graciously lent his name to our scholarship programme. This initiative supports children facing the same early challenges that inspired his rise to an OBE for services to Reading and later a knighthood for services to the nation.
On August 26th, 2024, Marie met with Sir John to discuss the remarkable progress of our Sir John Madejski Scholarship students. During this meeting, he reaffirmed his commitment, ensuring that our scholarship students will benefit from completely free tuition for many years to come.
Scholarships are available for Year 5 students across our locations in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire.

Sir John spent time in a children’s home as a baby during what he refers to as an ‘unstructured childhood’. His achievements in life have been many and include becoming Chancellor of the University of Reading and rebuilding the former Thamesbridge College as the John Madejski Academy. He initiated and funded The John Madejski Centre for Reputation at Henley Business School at The University of Reading. He is also a benefactor to the Royal Academy of Arts in Piccadilly, London and in 2004 had the John Madejski Fine Rooms at Burlington House named after him in recognition of a contribution of £3 million to the institution.

Sophia sat for her 11+ at Kendrick, Queen Anne`s and Reading Blue Coat.
She have been offered a full scholarship in both Queen Anne`s and Reading Blue Coat. And this morning we have been offered a place at Kendrick grammar school. We had made our decision already to send her to Reading Blue Coat but the cherry on the cake was the offer in Kendrick, that means she has done particularly well in her exams and there`s the signature of Marie Redmond all over it. We would also like to thank all the teachers that has worked with Sophia during her preparation and hope when you are in Winnersh next we could meet.
We have our youngest daughter, still in year 3 but will sit for her 11+ in a couple of years, I would be so grateful if you could send me the application form to apply for a scholarship at your institution in due time.

Scholarships for September 2025 have now been awarded.
Applications for the Sir John Madejski Scholarship for September 2026 are now open and will close on 31st March 2026. Scholarship awards will be announced by 31st May 2026, following classroom assessments earlier that month. Please note that these assessments are not trial lessons, and results will not be shared with parents. All scholarship decisions made by Marie Redmond Tuition are final.
Scholarship places are awarded in strict confidence. The recipient’s name will not be disclosed publicly, and their teacher will not be informed of their scholarship status. However, recipients are free to share this information at their discretion.
